Whats the significance of ratha yatra?
Ratha Yatra, abig and colorful festival of chariots, is held on Asadha Sukla Dwitiya i.e. the second day of bright fortnight of Asadha (June-July) every year. Millions of devotees and lovers of lord Jagannath from different parts of the state and country were come here witnessed the spectacle of world famous Car festival of Lord Jagannath at Puri. This festival is also known as 'Ghosha Yatra'. As per the prevailing tradition,Queen Gundicha was the Rani of Raja Indradyumna,he was the famed builder of the first temple. She had initiated this car festival. Hence, this festival is also known after her name as "gundicha yatra"
On this day, the three deities are taken out from the main Temple, with beautifully decorated and with dance and to visit their aunty house mausimaa mandir. There after they placed in three chariots (made of wood) and start their journey to Sri Gundicha Temple. The chariots are dragged by thousands of devotees from the Lion's gate of the Jagnnath temple to Sri Gundicha Temple which is located at a 3 kilometers of distance. The 3 kilometers Grand Road , known as 'Bada Danda', between Jagannath Temple and Sri Gundicha temple, looked like a sea of humanity as the devotees pumped to have a glimpse of the deities on the chariots.
And, the Lord, along with his siblings, begins his journey from the temple to Gundicha, to meet Queen of King Indradyumna, who built the famous Puri Temple.
On the fourth day, Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Jagannath visits the Gundicha temple to meet her husband. Then, after spending a few days at the Queen's abode, the three siblings begin their return journey on the eighth day. Their return journey is a ritual called bahuda.
However, on their way to the Puri abode, the Gods halt at the
Goddess Ardhashini's temple to pay obeisance to her. And after visiting the Goddess, they return to their main abode.
